minimalizing

in anticipation of moving at the end of the summer, I'm considering how to pare down my life-- in both material goods and time spent. here are a few steps on my to-do list:

  • unsubscribe from emails I don't use (online deals, etc)
  • give away books
  • give away clothes
  • toss stuff I never use/haven't looked at in mths/yrs!

organizing desk

organizing bookmarks

Do you keep a lot of internet bookmarks? I have a whole slew and pile of bookmarks upon bookmarks, folders and subfolders, with just enough categorization to make things even *harder* to find.

It's actually kind of like a messy room. I have approximate places where I'll toss online guitar tabs, or a neat recipe that I want to remember, or-- ooh! this incredibly cute site about how to grow your own avocado plant (basically for free, might I add)!

I've had to keep adding folders as I've found new types of links, and I attempted to exert some type of organization en masse by categorizing my folders into overarching categories (art links, hobbies, things to read, etc). The only problem was that it wasn't all that intuitive-- photo links could belong in art or hobbies, and I had a lot of sites related to blogging that could go in more than one category.

Anyway, if you're still reading this and haven't yawned and clicked over to your facebook page by now, step one of "spring cleaning" was to do away with all my subfolders and just lay all the folders out directly. I have over 20 of them in ABC order now, as well as a large number of homeless links that are in the main bookmarks folder.

My next order of business is to

  • move all the blogging links to a separate feed reader and Google reader
  • go through the folders once again and try to combine, merge, or delete what I can
The ultimate goal is to make bookmark saving and retrieval as easy as possible. Right now I don't use my bookmarks that much because of how unwieldy they are. Hopefully with a good and efficient system I'll use it more and it will improve my curiosity and discovery of more cool sites out there.
